The beaches of Kenya's Indian Ocean coastline are amongst the most beautiful in the world. Diani Beach, the areas main beach, offers 10 km of uninterrupted sands, lapped by the clear turquoise Indian Ocean, and forms the heart of the south coast. At Watamu, the coastline is dotted with headlands and stunning beaches, while further north Malindi is one of Kenya's oldest towns, and offers visitors a relaxed pace of life. Unhurried an undeveloped, Lamu Town once dominated the whole coastline, but today is a sleepy hideaway of Swahili culture and beautiful architecture. |

Mombasa City makes a fascinating experience, with a long history of trading and slaves. Visit Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese, and the Old Town, with it's array of shops and markets. Relaxation is the order of the day in both Watamu and Malindi. The Watamu Marine Park, stretching along 30 km of the coastline, is one of the main features of the area, where coral gardens and tropical fish are abundant. Absorbing the local culture and history in Lamu Town is essential, or relaxing on one of the glorious beaches, such as Shela Beach, is an ideal way to spend a few days. |

There's a good selection of hotels in Mombasa, ranging from simple properties for the budget-conscious to luxurious five star options. On the North Coast, the main beach area is at Bamburi, where the beach is lively and there's plenty to do, while the South Coast tends to be more peaceful, centered on Diani Beach. |
